Get moving: Exercise is always important although for many a challenge to get started. It does not have to be so difficult to incorporate exercise into your daily routine. Do not think of it as exercise, just get moving and make it enjoyable. Do you like to dance? Well put on your favorite song and start dancing 10 minutes a day. Keep dancing until you get to the 150 minutes per week of recommended physical activity. Taking your dog for a walk? Make sure to work in an extra 5 minutes until you reach a goal of 30 minutes per day. If you would like more ideas, come in to one of the Leon Medical Centers’ Healthy Living Center and speak to a trainer on how to incorporate exercise into your daily routine.
Be social: It is important to stay socially engaged at any age. Call up an old friend and make plans to see each other. Visit your grandchildren, invite them over for dinner – spend more time with family. If living away from family, find a club you can join or volunteer for a cause that is dear to your heart. At the Healthy Living Centers, you can find clubs that might be of interest. Come in and ask about all the options available.
Try something new: Find a new hobby and dive in. This will stimulate and challenge you. If you have a pastime you already enjoy, try a new twist. For instance, if gardening is something you enjoy –explore the latest in outdoor perennials or attend one of Bertila Ramos’ seminars at Leon Medical Centers.
Be conscious about your health: Monitor your health and any changes closely. Make sure you have a doctor’s appointment scheduled in the new year. Ask your PCP to reconcile your medications. Throw out all expired medication and make sure your refills are up to date. If you see a specialist regularly, now is a good time to make sure you have all your necessary appointments.
Wishing you and your family a healthy and happy new year. May you achieve all your healthy goals for 2020!
